Asymptomatic Bacteriuria or Urinary Tract Infection? New and Old Biomarkers

نویسندگان

چکیده

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infective disease in adult population. UTI diagnosis is based essentially on presence of lower urinary symptoms (e.g., dysuria, urgency, and frequency) evidence bacteriuria (by dipstick testing and/or urine culture). not always easy because can be vague, or patient basal conditions interfere negatively with diagnostic process, whereas culture still ongoing. In those cases, differential UTIs asymptomatic (ABU) may challenging, while clinician has to decide whether start an antibiotic treatment shortly. The purpose present review analyze biomarkers that could help diagnosis. Some biomarkers, such as procalcitonin, interleukin-6, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, chemokines, lactoferrin, bone morphogenetic protein-2, seem promising diagnosis, other failed show any utility. Whereas a single biomarker was enough, combination have more chances

Bacteria causing symptomatic urinary tract infection or asymptomatic bacteriuria.

One thousand bacterial isolates from consecutive suprapublic aspirations of urine in two groups of patients with symptomatic urinary tract infection and two groups with asymptomatic bacteriuria were studied. Staphylococci accounted for 13 and 27% of the isolates from symptomatic patients but for only 3 and 4% of strains from asymptomatic bacteriuria. Conversely, 18 and 30% of Escherichia coli i...

Asymptomatic Urinary Tract Infection in Pregnant Women

Background and Objectives: Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections in the human population, and more frequent infection during pregnancy. With notice to this point that most of urinary tract infections during pregnancy are asymptomatic, they could lead to serious complications such as prematurity, low-birth weight, hypertension, and higher fetal mortality rates...

Asymptomatic bacteriuria and symptomatic urinary tract infections during pregnancy.

Urinary tract infections are common complications of pregnancy; upper tract infections in particular may lead to significant morbidity for both the mother and fetus. Bacteriuria is a significant risk factor for developing pyelonephritis in pregnant women. Therefore, proper screening and treatment of bacteriuria during pregnancy is necessary to prevent complications. All women should be screened...

Risk of urinary tract infection and asymptomatic bacteriuria among diabetic and nondiabetic postmenopausal women.

No prospective data exist on the risk of microbiologically confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) and asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) in relation to diabetes mellitus and its characteristics. The authors prospectively (1998-2002) followed 218 diabetic and 799 nondiabetic Washington State women aged 55-75 years for UTI and AB. The baseline examination and two annual follow-up examinations include...

Interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in children with febrile urinary tract infection and asymptomatic bacteriuria.

Urine and serum interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 responses were higher in children with febrile urinary tract infection (n = 61) than in those with asymptomatic bacteriuria (n = 39). By univariate analysis, cytokine levels were related to age, sex, reflux, renal scarring, urine leukocytes, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and bacterial properties (P fimbriae but not he...
